1. Is Mobile Messaging available in all U.S. Cellular markets?

1-Way and 2-Way Mobile Messaging are currently available to U.S. Cellular digital customers in California, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Missouri, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

2. What is 1-Way Mobile Messaging?

1-Way Mobile Messaging allows U.S. Cellular digital customers to receive the following services:

  • Web-Based Mobile Alerts - You can receive all kinds of information on your wireless phone if you register with one of the many Web sites that offer to send "alerts" to your handset. This gives you access to the latest news, weather, stock prices, sports scores and more.
  • E-mail Messaging - With E-mail Messaging, anyone can easily send a message to your wireless phone from a standard e-mail program, such as Microsoft OutlookTM. Your e-mail address is your 10-digit wireless phone number@uscc.textmsg.com. Senders can send messages to as many as 16 U.S. Cellular 1-Way Mobile Messaging subscribers at the same time.
  • Internet Messaging - Anyone can send a text message to a 1-Way Mobile Messaging subscriber from our Web site. Just go to our homepage (www.uscellular.com) and click the "Send a Message to a Phone" button, which is located on the blue bar at the top of the page. And, with the group distribution feature, the same message can be sent to as many as 25 U.S. Cellular 1-Way Mobile Messaging subscribers.

3. What is 2-Way Mobile Messaging?

2-Way Mobile Messaging allows U.S. Cellular digital customers to use their handsets to send, receive and reply to text messages from other U.S. Cellular 2-Way Mobile Messaging subscribers.

4. Can I send a message to any U.S. Cellular customer?

No. Only U.S. Cellular customers with digital service who have subscribed to Mobile Messaging can receive text messages.

5. Do I pay airtime charges to send, receive or read messages or Information Services?

No, there are no airtime charges or use of minutes from your monthly calling plan.

6. Can I receive a message if I am outside my U.S. Cellular digital home coverage area?

No, you must be in the digital portion of your home service area to receive a text message. If you are outside your U.S. Cellular home service area, the message will be delivered to your phone when you return to your home area and turn on your phone.

7. How long will a message be saved for me if my phone is turned off or if I am outside my U.S. Cellular home area for an extended time?

Our network will store the message and attempt to deliver it to you for seven days. After that, the message will be deleted.

8. How do I receive notification that a message has been sent to me?


The method of notification varies depending on your specific phone model. Most phones offer both visual and audible notification. Please consult your user's manual for details.

9. Is there a limit on how long a message can be?


The maximum length of a message is 150 characters (including spaces and punctuation). Please note that the 150-character limit also includes the sender's e-mail address and the subject line (if applicable). If a message is longer than 150 characters, the remainder will be truncated and the recipient will not get it.

10. What happens if I am on the phone or have my phone turned off when a message arrives?


Your phone must be turned on in order to receive messages and for the audible and visual notifications to function. If you are on the phone, the message will be delivered once you end the call. You must also be in the digital portion of your home service area.

11. Will my phone automatically save the messages I send and receive?


Once delivered to your phone, the messages are stored within the phone. However, if you do not delete the old messages and your phone's memory becomes full, new messages will not be delivered until you delete old messages. Messages you send are also stored by the phone until you delete them. These also use memory.

12. How many messages does my phone hold?

This varies depending on your specific phone model. Refer to your owner's manual for details.

13. Can I set my phone to receive text messages but not incoming calls?

Most phones allow you to set a "message mode" or "pager mode," which means it will not ring but will still alert you when a text message is received. Refer to your owner's manual for details.

14. Do I need a special phone to use 1-Way Mobile Messaging, i.e., to receive an Internet/e-mail message or Web-Based Mobile Alert?

Yes, you must have a compatible digital phone.

15. What is an Internet message (for 1-Way Mobile Messaging)?

An Internet message is a short text message sent from the U.S. Cellular Web site to a U.S. Cellular customer's digital phone. The message recipient must subscribe to 1-Way Mobile Messaging and have a compatible phone. Messages can be composed of words or numbers and can be up to 150 characters in length.

Unfortunately, we cannot provide confirmation of message receipt.

18. Can I send an Internet message to a group of people at the same time?


Yes. When sending a message from our Web site (see Question #16 above), you can create multiple groups of up to 25 members each by following the instructions. A text message of up to 150 characters can then be sent to a group. Each group member must subscribe to U.S. Cellular's 1-Way Mobile Messaging feature.

19. What kinds of information can I have sent to my wireless phone?

The choices are almost endless. You can receive all kinds of information on your wireless phone if you register with one, or several, of the many Web sites that offer to send free "alerts" to your phone. Some of these include:

Most of the Web sites that offer to send information to your wireless phone allow you to choose when and how often the information will be delivered.

21. Can my phone receive e-mail messages?


Yes, your phone can receive e-mail messages of up to 150 characters. Using any standard e-mail program, such as Microsoft OutlookTM, senders simply enter your e-mail address, which is your 10-digit cellular number@uscc.textmsg.com. Please note that the 150-character limit includes the sender's e-mail address and the subject line (if applicable). If a message is longer than that, the remainder will be truncated and the recipient will not get it.

22. Can I send an e-mail message to a group of people at the same time?


Yes. When sending a message from a standard e-mail program, such as Microsoft Outlook, you can send the same e-mail to as many as 16 people (8 in the "To:" field, and 8 in the "CC:" field). Simply address e-mails to the e-mail address of the 1-Way Mobile Messaging subscriber. This is the 10-digit cellular number@uscc.textmsg.com.

A text message of up to 150 characters can be sent to a group. (Please see Question #9 above for more information on character limits.) Each person must subscribe to U.S. Cellular's 1-Way Mobile Messaging to receive the message.
